What Is Springfield Famous For

If you are a fan of the animated television comedy The Simpsons, then you already know a little bit about the name Springfield and its widespread fame. Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who was coaching athletics at what is now Springfield College, in 1891, invented the game of basketball here. He wanted to develop a game which would fill in the season between the football and baseball seasons. The resulting sport was instantly popular and has evolved into the worldwide giant it is today.
